Mobile Gadgets: Kindle 2 ready for pre-order

Published by debcook under technology Edit This

Amazon Kindle 2 - photo from Amazon.comThe Kindle 2 is finally showing up on Amazon.com. Over the past couple of months we have anticipated its arrival while wondering if the “leaked” pictures were accurate. Through those pictures I had my own expectations but I am amazed at how thin it is. Admittedly, I am getting won over. Since I am unable to get my hands on one I have included this picture from Amazon.com.

I am wondering whether the Kindle 2 will be of much use to someone like myself since I do not read books very often. Magazine articles, newspapers, blogs and websites fit into my daily lifestyle best. There is very little down time that would allow me to read an entire book in a short period of time. On the other hand maybe I would read more if I could chunk it into smaller bites without having to carry a dog-eared book around with me.

Then again, the “Read-to-Me” feature is very exciting. Since Kindle 2 can read out loud to me it would be easy to listen while commuting or even while I am working. Just in case I do want to read while on the go I appreciate the no-glare screen.

After checking out the availability of magazines for the Kindle 2 the list seems rather short. I was looking for PC World or other technology magazines and unless I am mistaken Technology Review is the closet match available.

My final opinion has not been finalized yet. Love at first sight – maybe. The price brings me back to reality however. It is not that I think that the $359 is unreasonable it is simply questionable that I would use it enough to justify it. The always-available 3G wireless connection, the extraordinary battery life and huge selections of books, magazines and newspapers could be the justification for most people.

You know, I am really having a difficult time talking myself out of getting my name on that first-come-first-to-receive list. I’ll let you know. If you cannot resist click on over to Amazon.com and reserve one of your own.
