Green Gadgets: Wind up flashlights and radios

Published by debcook under technology Edit This

Every home does not come equipped with emergency generator power. If the lights go out so does our connection to the outside world. Well, maybe things don’t get that dire too quickly, but it feels like it in any case.

After surviving an ice storm a year ago it has become obvious what we were missing. A portable radio and lights that can be powered by battery or by hand cranking would have been handy during our time of need.

We could cook macaroni and cheese in the daytime (we use natural gas) but once the sun went down it was dark – very dark. It was quite too. Needless to say I took a lot of naps and was bored – very bored.

Anyway, since then I have researched hand cranked radios and flashlights. I was amazed at the popularity and the abundance of solar powered and hand cranked gadgets. Since there is so many that can easily be found by typing words into your favorite search engine such as solar lantern, hand-crank flashlight or self-powered radio I will concentrate more on the features that you might look for.

· AM/FM and or Weather Band radio
· Flashlight
· Emergency flashing light
· Cell phone charger

The Wind N Go Lantern is a good choice because it has features not found on most gadgets of this type. In addition to the features listed above you will find a compass, a 120-decibel siren, a mosquito repelling frequency and an outlet for plugging in an iPod or other mP3 player.

I suggest doing your shopping now before you need a non-electric powered light and radio.
