Gadgets: MobileMe free trial can it be cancelled - maybe

Published by debcook under technology Edit This

I am writing this during extreme frustration. I am trying to cancel my 60-day trial of MobileMe. This has got to be the most convoluted process in existence today.

I received an email a few days ago reminding me that my MobileMe account was going to become active within seven days. I had forgotten that I even signed up so since then I have been trying to cancel the account before the deadline.

Ninety-nine dollars for a service that is reported to be more trouble than it is worth does not appeal to me. Originally I signed up for the trial immediately after I bought my iPhone 3G – before I even understood what MobileMe was.

First I typed in MobileMe.com in my browser. I was taken to web page that wanted me to upgrade Safari. The last option on the page was to go to Apple Support. I went there and after searching for an option to cancel MobileMe I clicked on “Account”. I was still missing something.

Again, I found no option to cancel MobileMe. I began to search Google for an answer. All I found was several forums where I read that a lot of other people were suffering my same dilemma.

I typed MobileMe.com into my browser and was rerouted to “apple.com/mobileme”. I logged in and finally noticed the box on the left hand side of the page with the option “Account and Billing”. I was feeling hopeful when I clicked on the elusive option. My hopeful feeling turned to anger when the box expanded and all I could see was a big blank area. I tried over and over again – nothing.

While writing this I have clicked back and forth to see if the box populated. Again I have been frustrated by the way this site is treating me. The box did populate once but as to tease me when I tried to click “cancel” everything in the box disappeared. Once again the box was blank.

As a last resort I re-booted my computer. No change - why did I think it was my computer’s fault? I have tried for over one hour but as of this writing I have been unable to cancel my MobileMe free trial account.
