Gadgets: Backup, Backup, Backup now!
Most people (I hope) back up their data on a fairly regular basis. Digital photos are probably a majority of those files and they end up on external hard dives, flash drives and CD/DVDs. If you don’t back up your data there is something you need to remember. You don’t have to worry if your computer will crash – you need to worry about when it will crash.
I have written about this topic and even this particular drive before. I bring it up again because I truly feel that everyone needs to take that extra step to protect his or her data. If you have note purchased a backup device yet – please do it now. There are numerous backup devices out there but I think that this one is intriguing enough to get your attention.
I like to back up my data on an external hard drive but they can become a drain on a laptop battery pretty quickly. Unless I am working on a project that requires repeated “saving of files” that drain seems to be a waste of battery life. Even I have disconnected my backup device when I should have left it connected.
It would be interesting to plug one of these drives into an electrical usage monitor to see just how much energy it would use.
Kanguru has come out with an external hard drive that solves this issue. I like that the largest one hold 750GB of data. That is so much more space than I need but I just never know when I might need it. If I ever get one of those cool SLR cameras that shoot Raw files…
Ok, back to the subject at hand. The Kanguru Eco external hard drive saves energy. When the drive is sitting idle it reduces its own power consumption to match its own needs. Supposedly it can save up to 75 percent more energy than most other external hard drives.
There are options if you do not want or need 750GB. The Kanguru Eco is also available in 80GB, 150GB and 500GB versions. The prices can range from approximately $90 to $150. I like flash drives for their size and convenience but until the storage capacity is increased to match an external hard drive I will use both.
