Gadget: Kitchen tool that improves food safety

Published by debcook under technology Edit This

Germs in the kitchen can make you very ill. Cross contamination between meats and vegetables on counters, chopping blocks and utensils is a real problem.

Cleaning with a diluted mixture of bleach and water goes a long way towards controlling germs such as salmonella. Used sponges should be thrown away after a period of time.

Hammacher Schlemmer is one of my favorite catalogs. One of the kitchen items caught my eye. The Germ Eliminating Knife Block sterilizes knives by the same method that hospitals use to sterilize their instruments. A UV-C light can kill what they call “surface bacteria”. This knife block uses the UV-C light to sterilize knives placed in it.

A total of five knives can be sterilized at once. The UV-C light can be activated with the insertion of the knives or the light can be set to come on every three hours.

Forty dollars seems a low price to pay for a gadget that can improve the kitchen safety for a family.
