Gadgets: Save data while saving energy

Published by debcook under technology Edit This

External hard drives are totally efficient at holding data. It could be data that you need daily – or it could be the extra copy of files that you need periodically. Most external hard drives draw their power from a laptop or desktop computer via a USB port.

A computer has settings that control the power usage. Typically an external hard drive does not. In fact I had never heard of one that had the capability to determine when extra power was needed versus times that it was not needed as much.

There are many reasons to use a drive with power saving capabilities. I use my laptop without the power brick and I also use an external hard drive. As long as I do not need enough computing power to last over four hours I have no problem. But, if I have devices that drain the battery quicker then I am forced to carry the charging cable along.

The Kanguru Eco Drive comes in two versions. The 3.5” has storage room for up to 750GB of data, photos, video or music files. I like that the drive speed is 7200 RPM – burning CD/DVD disks are easier with a fast drive. The file transfer rate is 480Mbps.

The 2.5” Kanguru Eco Drive has less storage capacity (320GB) but the file transfer rate is the same (480MBPS).

These drives uses special monitoring software to save up to 75% more power than other less eco friendly external hard drives. These would be very laptop friendly.
