Windows Mobile: Function vs Fun and Glitz

Published by debcook under technology Edit This

Why do I like Window mobile? Didn’t I know that I would miss it when I bought an iPhone 3G? Did I think that there would be 3rd party programs available that would be compatible with Windows Mobile? It works side by side with my computer; yes I knew that I would miss some of the Windows Mobile functions; I was hoping.

I have used Windows Mobile devices for a long time. My palm was great but I liked my Pocket PC better. As soon as I could afford it I purchased a PDA mobile phone with a QWERTY keyboard. Speaking of costs I think that I had a better (ROI) return on investment with my PDA cell phone than I have with my iPhone 3G.

Organized personalities need Windows Mobile. I would go out on a limb and say that they need a PDA phone over a Smartphone. I will defend that statement by saying that the Touchscreen makes all the difference. Take the calendar for instance. Appointments are always being rescheduled so the cut/copy/paste function is a huge time saver – not to mention that fewer mistakes will be made when re-typing.

I am a writer – hopefully a good one – and it takes a lot of time and dedication to meet deadlines. Windows mobile was helpful since I could write straight to Microsoft Word. It was faster than pulling out my laptop in many situations.

Microsoft Excel helped keep track of expenses such as for gas and for cash tickets. At the end of the year – tax time – I knew that I had a good record of my deductions.

What would I miss from my iPhone 3G? Web surfing would be my first thought. I like the text-messaging format and I love deleting email into the trashcan. The calendar would be great except it needs cut/copy/paste. The GPS works great and it is free.

In my opinion I have traded function for fun and glitz.
