iPhone 3G - Reception should improve with upcoming software update
Right on the heels of my post about the iPhone 3G receptions issues, there is some news. First suspected to be a hardware problem involving the chipset has more likely turned out to be something else.
I wondered out loud whether all iPhones and iPhone users were involved. For example, I am not experiencing bad reception or dropped calls. My answer may have come today. Apparently the problem has something to do with how many 3G users are on a cell tower at one time. A post on MacRumor.com claimed that a reader had emailed Steve Jobs at Steve@apple.com and had received a reply.
Part of the problem is also thought to be caused when an iPhone 3G is switched between 3G and 2G. I read earlier (sorry I cannot remember where) that the iPhone 3G users that updated to 2.0.1 also had problems. In addition to their iPhones freezing they had similar problems when switching between 2G and 3G. I decided to wait until the issues were resolved before updating. You know how it is – if it’s not broke don’t fix it.
This 2G-3G problem only affects 2% to 3% of iPhone 3G users but that could be as many as 60,000 users. That is probably enough people to be a squeaky wheel and it should get fixed pretty quickly. It is great news that the problem can be rectified with a software update.
