iPhone 3G - Bad reception and cracks

Published by debcook under technology Edit This

No, tell me it is not true. The iPhone 3G has problems lurking that haunt those of us that own one. I knew from the beginning that I did not care for the plastic back. I must say in the iPhone 3G’s defense that I am not having any 3G connection problems – yet.

I’ve been reading that a lot of people are complaining about the new iPhone 3G because their signals are dropped and their reception is lousy in 3G areas. It is reported to be a hardware issue – namely the chipset. Some of the explanations are above my head but I do understand what it means when a gadget has a hardware problem. There is no fixing it with a downloadable update.

If I am having this problem I do not notice it. I have not heard whether this issue affects all of the iPhone 3G handsets but I assume that it does. As far as I know they all have the same chipsets. I also have not heard whether it matters what part of the country – or the world – you live in. I will just bask in my ignorance for the time being.

Reportedly the iPhone 3G has a plastic back so that the reception (hmmm) would be improved. Maybe that was not such a good idea. For some reason the white iPhones 3G is having more cracks appear than on the black iPhone 3G so what would cause that? I’m sure I do not know.

Curiosity got the best of me a minute ago and I started inspecting my black iPhone 3G. For a minute there I was convinced that I felt a crack. Thankfully on closer inspection and comparisons of photos of cracked phones on the internet I am convinced that what I feel with my fingernail is not a crack.

It is probably a good thing that these cracks are showing up so soon after the release of the iPhone 3G. Apple should understand that owners of these phones are so careful with them that it would be mighty strange for so many to get damaged so quickly. I have not heard first hand but apparently Apple is replacing cracked phones. I suggest that everyone do what I just did. Inspect your iPhone 3G for any cracks. The pictures I’ve seen show cracks on different areas. Some are near the microphone jack and some are near the corners.

Sorry to anyone having these problems. So far I am not – but I will be on the lookout everyday from here on out.
