Mobile Gadgets - Protect the Touchscreen

Now that I have my new Samsung Q1UP-V I realized today that I do not have a good way to carry it with me. Yes it is small enough to fit into my bag but that is not the issue. How do I protect the Touchscreen?

I have been searching the web for a small bag that is firm enough to protect the Touchscreen from other gadgets in my bag. I am worried that it may get scratched or even worse. In the owners manual it says not to use screen protectors because it may cause a “Newton Ring”. Great, now what do I do. It is difficult to explain what they are but I know that I do not want them.

My understanding of a Newton Ring is that if there is too much pressure exerted in one part of the touchscreen there will forever be a damaged spot. The spot will look like some sort of fingerprint that shows up as circular lines when light comes through. It could also look like a drop of water with a wavy pattern.

A laptop sleeve is just too flimsy. I love some of the BUILT NY sleeves but they would not protect against too much pressure caused by other gadgets in the same bag.

There is a small portfolio style wrap case specifically for the Q1UP but from what I read it does not fit very well unless there is an external keyboard packed along with it.

Then there is the Otter Box made specifically for the Q1UP. In the past I have researched Otter Boxes for digital cameras and for Pocket PCs (PPC) but this is the first one that I’ve seen for a UMPC. They are supposed to very sturdy and even water resistant. Seems like a bit of overkill but I would like the protection factor. The Otter Box would increase the weight by 11.5 oz. but I guess that is not much more than some other cases. Still, one of the major points for buying a UMPC is lessening the overall weight of one’s bag.

I am open to suggestions from anyone about which protective bag I should consider for my new Samsung Q1UP. I want something small and lightweight as well as strong and pressure resistant. I may end up with the portfolio style case that is designed for the Q1UP but I want to exhaust my other options first. Until then I may have to carry it in the black cardboard box that it shipped in. Sigh.
