Public WiFi - Is yours password protected?
2008-08-05 19:45:40
Everyday I try something new on my (almost new) iPhone 3G. This morning during my morning walk I passed in front of my local McDonalds. Just for grins I removed my iPhone 3G from its pouch case to use it as a WiFi finder. It is common knowledge that many McDonalds offer WiFi like the one here.
Every morning I pass by and notice anything that changed from the previous morning. Usually most everything is the same but lately I noticed that the “WiFi Here” poster has been removed from the McDonalds’s front window. “Why is the poster missing” I wondered.
Sure enough, my iPhone 3G picked up the WiFi signal in front of the McDonalds and prompted me to connect. That should have satisfied my curiosity but then I wondered how many other WiFi networks could be detected along my route.
As I walked along I passed in front of a bank and guess what. I was again prompted to connect to a WiFi network. A bit further and I was prompted again. Each time I received the prompt I closed the prompt and went on about my business of exercise.
I was glad to see that each and every one of the WiFi networks my iPhone detected were password protected. Makes me proud of my neighbors.
I know that the iPhone is not the only cell phone that will detect a WiFi network but I am amazed at how the iPhone makes the choice so easy. I like that I do not have to hunt through settings and fumble to get everything set up correctly. With my iPhone I simply say yes or no and go on with my day.
Maybe in the morning I’ll ask McDonalds why they removed the poster. Surely they thought that no one would notice.
