Cell Signal vs RF Signal

I really like the metal roofs that have become so popular over the past couple of years. In fact I priced them and have tried to decide which color would look best on my house.
While visiting family for the 4th of July celebration I was unable to check my email on my cell phone – unless I stepped outside. That’s right the house had a metal roof. It was a surprise to me but not to the people that lived there. Looks like more research in order.
Still trying to check my email I stepped out on the deck. There I noticed a cool gadget called a remote thermostat. Ribs were cooking in the smoker and there was a small remote control looking device sitting on the attached table. A cable ran from the device’s base station – then up under the lid of the smoker. A probe on the other end of the cable was recording the internal cooking temperature of the meat.
RF (Radio Frequency) was the technology that the remote device used. The remote could be inside the house and still read the temperature of the meat cooking in the smoker. It was interesting that the RF could pass through the wall and/or window but my cell signal could not pass through the same way.
